Position Highlights

Under the Diversity & Inclusion Division and reporting to the Director for APASA, the Coordinator will support the University of Arizona’s efforts toward building and sustaining a diverse, inclusive and culturally vibrant campus, which fosters a pluralistic learning environment and a sense of belonging for students, with a particular emphasis on Asian Pacific Islander Desi American (APIDA) students.

The Coordinator will work closely with the Director for APASA and student staff to run a robust and vibrant student center. The Coordinator will guide and advise students in designing programs that create a sense of belonging and offer opportunities for personal growth and identity development. More specifically, the Coordinator will be reaching out to APIDA students, supporting students who participate in APASA programs and services, and create and implement leadership development programs. The Coordinator will design and implement programs that support and increase wellness and resilience, incorporating culturally affirming practices that acknowledge the challenges faced by APIDA students.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Manage the day-to-day operations of the Center, including front and back office operations and student, staff, and faculty inquiries.
  • Recruit, hire, supervise, coach and/or support student employees, interns, volunteers and students who utilize the Asian Pacific American Student Affairs (APASA) Center.
  • Provide general support, advocacy, and referrals for individual students to campus resources including ODI affiliated organizations and resources that support persistence and belonging.
  • Plan, implement, and evaluate all signature events, programs and trainings that integrate leadership development, intercultural competence opportunities, and coalition building (e.g. Lotus Laureate Graduation Convocation, Welcome and Open House events, Mental Health & Wellness programs, Heritage Month and Awareness Building Programs, Training Programs, and Living Learning Community Programs).
  • Collaborate with Diversity & Inclusion Division to provide program and engagement data for assessment and institutional reporting.
  • Oversee event publicity, manage online calendar, manage social media, and update website. Oversee creation and dissemination of the weekly E-Newsletter that includes events and announcements from across the Tucson community.
  • Coordinate outreach efforts to raise awareness of the various programs and resources available through APASA, including outreach to new students at Orientation, Wildcat Welcome, Graduate Student Orientation, and other UA-wide student events. Represent Asian Pacific American Student Affairs and the Diversity & Inclusion Division at outreach events as needed.
  • Work with Graduate Assistant to meet with leadership of APASA-affiliated student groups on a regular basis and advise
    executive board members.
  • Provide general support, advocacy, and referrals for individual students to campus resources including IME affiliated organizations and resources that support persistence and belonging. Serve as a contact for students in crisis and manage the crisis contact information for the center. 
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues in IME to meet the diverse needs of students served across all cultural and resource centers.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Skills in engendering and integrating the values
    of diversity, inclusion, intersectionality and teamwork across various groups.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Publisher, and Power Point), e-mail and the Internet.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree plus 3 years of experience working in higher education or related setting focused on retention
  • Experience in developing, implementing and evaluating programs and initiatives.
  • Experience providing crisis intervention and appropriate referrals to campus and community resources.
  • Supervisory experience with the ability to oversee and direct the day-to-day work of multiple individuals (i.e., graduate
    assistants, interns, and/or undergraduate students).
  • Experience overseeing production of outreach materials and updating website content.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Higher Education or related field
  • At least two years experience working directly with APIDA populations (e.g. community organizations, educational
    settings, etc.).
  • Experience in advising, counseling, and crisis response in serving and supporting students from marginalized
    communities.
  • Experience with program development and budget management in a higher education setting.
  • Experience working with multiple identity groups.
  • Experience working in cultural centers in a higher education setting.
