New Port Richey, Florida, Florida, This position is located in the Dental Service at VA Tampa Healthcare System – Deer Park VA Clinic in New Port Richey, FL. The Dental Laboratory Technician supports the staff dentists on a regular and recurring basis. Minimum Requirement: The following are minimum requirements for appointment as a Dental Laboratory Technician in the Veterans Health Administration (VHA). One of the following minimum requirement criteria must be met to be qualified for this position. Specialized Experience (GS-08): You must have one (1) year of specialized experience that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA’s) to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (i. e. , GS-07). Specialized experience for this position and grade include: Use of dental laboratory material such as impression materials, plasters, stones, hydrocolloids, waxes, metals, acrylics, porcelain, and similar materials; Use of laboratory equipment such as hand tools, dental lathes, engines, and hand pieces, furnaces, casting machines, presses, flasks, and related equipment; Use of precision instruments such as articulators, surveyors, and microanalyzers; and Construction of dental prosthetic appliances. ) OR, Education (GS-08): Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have one and a half year of graduate education that is directly related to the work of the position. Note: One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent 1 year of full-time study. If that information cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours should be considered as satisfying the 1 year of full-time study requirement. Part-time graduate education is creditable in accordance with its relationship to a year of full-time study at the school attended. [“***THIS IS NOT A VIRTUAL POSITION, YOU MUST LIVE WITHIN OR BE WILLING TO RELOCATE WITHIN A COMMUTABLE DISTANCE OF THE DUTY LOCATION*** Major duties and responsibilities include but not limited to: Performing total fabrication of both fixed or semi-fixed restorations, full or removable partial dentures, orthodontic appliances and/or dental splints and obturators Observing dental abnormalities, which present retention and design problems requiring special treatment planning and suggestions when requested Making recommendations, which will be accepted and incorporated, into the patient’s treatment plan without significant modification Advising in the design of unique prostheses for trauma and cancer patients where oral tissue is mutilated or missing and independently completing all laboratory procedures on these complex cases Constructing wrought wire buccal arm clasps to reduce tension on teeth and prolong their life, and acrylic esthetic replacements for gingival tissue removed during Perio Surgery Researching out the best materials for use in laboratory procedures involving “state of the art” implants, magnet dentures, permanent soft-liners and light cured materials Providing on-the-job training and basic dental laboratory instruction to special individuals (dental hygienists, dental assistants, summer aids, volunteer workers and dental students) Designing and constructing teaching models of different prosthetic appliances to demonstrate how proper principles of construction are incorporated into the final product Blocking out master casts, waxing complete dentures for try-in, according to dentist’s prescription, for checking final tooth arrangement appearance and speech function in the patient’s mouth by the prescribing dentist Reproducing dentures with a high degree of precision and accuracy; carefully recording the relationship of teeth and ridge; removing the teeth from the dentures, repositioning and waxing teeth for processing Removing excess acrylic from dentures, grinding and selecting methods to simulate contours of natural tissue Polishing dentures carefully to remove all scratches; preserving anatomical borders developed by the Dentist by skillfully applying specialized tools to the denture in finishing Bending wrought wire clasps and bars to conform to the case design outlined upon the surveyor’s cast.

Tempering and shaping metal with various types of pliers into various component parts Submitting articulated casts for partial denture framework fabrication in the Central Dental Laboratory, Dallas, Texas, and upon receipt of the cast framework, adding saddle areas with the teeth and processes partial denture as previously outlined Fabricating crown, inlays and fixed partial dentures from gold alloys, porcelain or acrylic materials, alone or in combination, according to the requirements of the case Selecting appropriate porcelain or acrylic facings of proper shade, size and shape Providing cutout space for veneer on facial surface where required, selecting and adapting porcelain facings using a high degree of precision Casting gold attachments and pieces and pontics; aligning and soldering bridges; processing acrylic crowns and veneers; grinding and polishing castings; exercising extreme care near the margins to avoid loss of margin adaptation Constructing and fabricating bite raisers, cleft palate obturators, fracture splints, immediate dentures, surgical template, and orthodontic appliances Ordering and stocking supplies required in his/her laboratory for all removable and fixed prosthetics in sufficient quantity and quality so as not to create any delay in the patient service delivery Performing preventive maintenance on all laboratory equipment Maintaining records of workload for various reporting purposes in a timely and accurate manner Following manufacturers recommendations and Reusable Medical Equipment (RME), Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) regarding Dental equipment (critical, semi critical, non-critical items) Work Schedule: 40 hours a week; Compressed work schedule available; Work schedule can be discussed during an interview.
