About the Role
ABC News Digital is looking for a skilled journalist to be part of its audience engagement team on a contract basis. Working with the Supervising Producer, Audience Engagement and other engagement specialists you will help to enhance our connection with Australians by strengthening their voice and participation in the newsgathering process. You will have experience identifying patterns in search trends, spotting themes in reader questions and interpreting digital analytics to inform commissioning. You will help to manage audience engagement projects for News Digital’s national team and advise on distribution strategies for a range of digital platforms.
Each week thousands of Australians make contact with ABC News to share their story. The role will see you harness those stories to ensure our output on the biggest national and international stories continually reflects the broad diversity of the Australian community. Your skills will enable you to turn stories on topics like into polished digital content to tight deadlines, through engaging and accessible writing styles and compelling presentation techniques.
As part of a small team, you will:
- Identify trends in audience behaviour, such as through activity on search engines, to contribute ideas for relevant content for a variety of audiences and demographics.
- Write stories and create other types of digital content.
- Review published stories and use your experience and knowledge to improve their success with different audiences.
About You
You are passionate about telling stories that matter to Australians and want them to have a role in shaping our news coverage. You believe that News organisations should engage in an ongoing conversation with audiences about what’s on their mind and what they want to know. You can produce accurate and concise copy and have a practised ability to deliver engaging content. You have practical experience working in a news environment or similar and a strong understanding of the way news stories are presented online.
Demonstrated digital skills and knowledge of, and enthusiasm for, online as a medium are a must, along with:
- Highly developed ability to produce accurate and concise copy, and ability to produce engaging, digital-first content.
- Sound editorial judgement with a demonstrated track record in making editorial decisions under deadline pressure.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively as part of a small team.
- Experience interpreting search engine trends and optimising content for search visibility.
