Job Description

Taylor University is seeking applications and nominations of distinctive candidates for the part-time position of Director of the Boren
Gallery of Western American Art.

Qualifications

Candidates must have a personal, vibrant faith and Christian walk
and be strongly committed to the educational mission and evangelical Christian orientation of the University. Taylor University is a

University Life Together Covenant, Statement of Faith, and essential documents.This position is half-time. A Master of Arts in Arts
Administration, Museum Administration, Curation or similar is highly preferred. Requirements include two years’ experience in arts
administration at a reputable academic, public, or private gallery or museum, as well as hands-on experience with art installation,
lighting, security, wall repair and archival storage. A Bachelor or Master of Arts in History or Art History will be an advantage.

Responsibilities

  • Become familiar with the entire collection and artists represented
  • Gain expertise in
    American western art milieus and genres as well as prominent artists
  • Collaborate with university administration on final
    renovations to the Helena building and initial gallery setup to best suit the collection
  • Curate initial selections from the full
    collection for an inaugural exhibition
  • Install and light the inaugural exhibition
  • Plan, promote and execute the gallery
    opening and related programming
  • Develop operational parameters for the gallery
  • Recruit, train and manage student
    docents
  • Manage and host the gallery during open hours
  • Periodically circulate collection items in and out of storage for
    display
  • Foster art/collection knowledge, awareness and participation among university students
  • Work with the Town of
    Upland and local school districts to promote and inform about the art gallery
  • Host visits with local school classes, campus and
    community groups
  • Collaborate with an advisory council of campus constituencies
  • Coordinate with Advancement to procure
    long-term funding and potentially grow and diversify the collection
  • Recommend the sale/disposition or purchase of art

Department The Gallery

The collection is highly focused on western American art, curated by
consultants with donors Leland and LaRita Boren. It includes two- and three-dimensional works in a variety of media. The Helena
building at Taylor University is being converted into a dedicated gallery facility with archival storage space, climate and
humidity control and lighting. The facility is estimated to accommodate 60–70% of the collection, with the other
30–40% stored. The director should become expertly acquainted with the collection in order to achieve robust,
balanced and rotated exhibition. The successful candidate should expect to receive handoff from the construction
process and immediately begin planning, installing, promoting and hosting the inaugural exhibition in spring
2022. Hands-on work and ground-up establishment of procedures and practices will be required.
