Job Description

Reporting to the Dean of the Faculty, the Director of the Cantor Art Gallery will be responsible
for all aspects of the Cantor Art Gallery’s fine art exhibition program and its year round
operations, including developing and curating exhibitions and related programming that
proactively and creatively engages the lives of students, faculty and staff, as well as the greater
Worcester community, and beyond. The Director acts in a leadership capacity to partner with
faculty to co-curate exhibitions related to the curriculum. In addition to overseeing all
operational and administrative aspects of the Cantor Art Gallery itself, the Director is responsible
for the oversight and care of the Gallery’s permanent collection of 2,000+ objects.
The Director also develops events and programming to amplify the pedagogical goals of the
College, while providing opportunities for students and visitors to experience a range of
contemporary and historical art, and to learn about individual artists, art movements, and
culturally diverse subjects.

Gallery Structure and Collaborations

Located in the new Prior Performing Arts Center, a state-of-the art integrated arts building
designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro, the Cantor Art Gallery resides within the Provost’s area
and is heavily integrated into the academic and intellectual life of the College. The Director leads
a staff that includes an assistant director of communications and operations, a gallery fellow, a
student staff of interns and gallery attendants, and independent contractors hired by the Director
to assist with the preparation of exhibits. The role of the Gallery is rooted in the Catholic, Jesuit,
liberal arts identity of the College, which is detailed in the College’s Mission Statement

(https://aspire.holycross.edu). The Director will shape the Gallery’s program within this context.
In addition to the wide range of academic departments across the College and their faculty and
students, the Director works closely with administrative offices including the Office of Risk
Management; Public Safety; Graphic Arts; Communications and Marketing; and Campus
Facilities.

Major Areas of Responsibility

Exhibitions

  • Broadly reflecting the mission and pedagogical goals of the College, plan exhibition and
    associated programs on a multi-year schedule for the Cantor Art Gallery.
  • Curate, as well as partner with guest and faculty curators on original and diverse contemporary and
    historical art exhibitions that challenge and engage the academic, intellectual, and creative lives of
    faculty, students, and staff, as well as the Worcester community.
  • Work with the Visual Arts Department on the annual senior visual arts majors’ thesis exhibition.
  • Plan, coordinate, and execute the installation of all professionally presented exhibitions, including
    design and layout; transportation of artworks; and arranging for physical needs of artwork display.
  • Write and manage interpretative and promotional materials, including interpretative texts, catalogs,
    and print and digital advertising.
  • Develop interpretation and outreach strategies to engage campus and other communities with
    exhibitions and collections.
    Collections
  • Oversee the management of the Cantor Art Gallery Permanent Collection, including cataloging,
    research, and use of campus collections by internal and external partners.
  • Provide for the ongoing care and conservation of works housed in the Cantor collection.
  • In partnership with College Advancement department, engage donors and steward gifts of art to
    the permanent collection.
    Gallery Leadership and Operations
  • In support of the work of the Gallery, its exhibitions and collections, develop and collaborate on
    the development of inclusive educational programming, workshops, tours, guest lectures, and other
    outreach activities to the College, the local Worcester community, as well as public school
    programs.
  • Supervise and provide leadership for gallery employees and student staff and establish an inclusive
    working environment.
  • Represent the Cantor Art Gallery to and as part of campus leadership and committees.
  • Develop and manage the budget of all gallery operations; work with Advancement and the Office
    of Sponsored Research to identify and apply for grants and external funding.
  • Build and maintain professional relationships with diverse arts organizations, art collectors, artists,
    and other art museums and galleries.

    Requirements

    • MA or MFA in studio art, art history, arts administration, museum studies, curatorial studies, or
    • other relevant discipline or field; PhD desirable.
    • 3-5 years curatorial and administrative experience.
    • Demonstrated experience academically and intellectually engaging diverse groups through
    • programming and outreach
    • Exposure to a broad spectrum of art museum or gallery operations, including collections
    • management
    • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with a strong emphasis on relationship
    • building across different groups and disciplines
    • Understanding of the importance of liberal arts education
    • Demonstrated project and staff management experience
    • Demonstrated budget and finance management experience
