Description
The director provides both leadership to the Office of Academic Advising Undergraduate Team and high-quality academic advising to Webster University students, both online and in person. The directors provide vision and leadership for the academic advising of Webster University’s undergraduate students They serve in a leadership capacity within the office by facilitating day to day oversight for undergraduate advisors, lead committees and areas of work within the office and represent the office on university-wide committees. The Director provides support on initiatives focused on retention and completion, aligning with the mission of the office. Leading training, supervising advisors, providing mentoring, and leading special projects will be assumed by those in a director role. The Director partners with units across the Webster network to provide a consistent, student-centered experience for Webster’s distinctive populations of undergraduate students. Reporting to the Senior Director of Student Success, the Director leads a team of professional advisors housed in the Academic Advising Office in St. Louis who advise students and provide support and training for faculty advisors and a network of advisors at Webster’s extended international and domestic campuses. In the Senior Director’s absence and as assigned, the Director will provide general leadership and oversight to the entire office.

Academic Advisors provide high quality academic advising to Webster University students, both online and in person. Advisors assist students in the creation of educational plans that promote student success, align with the student’s academic and career goals, and follow academic curriculum requirements. Advisors are expected to understand, interpret, and communicate academic policy and procedure, to both students, and colleagues across the institution. Proactive advising approaches focused on student retention and completion are integral and advisors may engage in intrusive advising and continuous follow-up to at-risk students. By building relationships with academic units and other academic/student development partners, advisors can guide and refer students to appropriate resources. Advisors obtain and share knowledge across multiple disciplines. Advisors are responsible to their students, their institution, their professional practice, for involving others, to higher education, and to themselves.

The mission of the Academic Advising Center is to empower students to achieve their academic and professional goals while providing comprehensive advising tools and resources to the global Webster University community.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities*

  • Supervisory responsibility of academic advisors
  • Assist with day-to-day office management
  • Provide general leadership, training and development, and mentoring to academic advising staff and other colleagues
  • Lead, coordinate, and serve on various committees, both internal and external
  • Assume special projects in consultation with the senior director, that support strategic plan initiatives, in line with both the office and university mission
  • Provide strategic and data-driven decision-making in alignment with institutional goals.
  • Lead initiatives to strengthen and improve undergraduate academic advising with attention to specific populations at Webster, including traditional undergraduate students, transfer students, adult learners, international students, online students, and students admitted on condition.
  • Lead and/or actively participate in initiatives to strengthen areas of strategic enrollment
  • Collaborate with academic leadership of the schools and colleges to strengthen faculty advising for students, including providing training for faculty advisors
  • Collaborate with units to support student success, including the Academic Resource Center, First Year Programs, Athletes, Career Services, MCISA, Financial Aid, Admissions and Counseling
  • Oversee Undergraduate Advising programs and events, including summer advising
  • Manage budget for undergraduate advising
  • Participate in the leadership of Division of Student Success
  • Understand, interpret, and communicate academic policy and procedure; assume responsibility for policy and operational decisions in director’s absence
  • Assist students in developing educational plans that are consistent with academic and professional goals of student
  • Help students access campus resources that will increase academic success
  • Refer students to appropriate campus resources
  • Evaluate student progress
  • Evaluate transfer credits for advising purposes
  • Review, collect, and utilize data about student academic and educational needs, performance, retention, completion, and concerns

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in higher education, student affairs, counseling, education, or other relevant field
  • 5+ years’ experience in advising roles with increased responsibility

Preferred Qualifications

  • Doctorate or terminal degree
  • Demonstrated success as an advisor and leader
  • Excellent use of modern/current technology
  • Strong interpersonal and relational skills
  • Skills in problem solving
  • Ability to learn easily and disseminate detailed information
