Campus Statement
Phoenix College (PC), the first public junior college in Arizona, welcomed its first students on September 13, 1920. In 1962, PC transitioned to a community college that is part of the Maricopa Community College District. Job Summary
Under the management of the Learning Commons (LC) Manager, this position assists in the planning, development, coordination, and support of tutoring services in the areas of writing and ESL and serves as a liaison between the Learning Commons, faculty, and other academic support areas. This position includes tutor training facilitation, tutoring in an approved content area(s), and creating and conducting workshops. Demonstrates a commitment to excellence, innovation, student success, diversity, and inclusion in the performance of job duties.
Essential Functions
60% – Focuses on the day-to-day operations and activities of ESL/Writing tutors; ensures delivery of quality tutoring services in accordance with tutoring best practices and established policies in collaboration with the LC Leadership team; addresses issues that arise in tutoring session; and coordinates online Writing Lab
15% – Works collaboratively with the LC Leadership team in the planning of employee development, center operations and in creating department initiatives in support of student success, retention, and persistence; build relationships with faculty, staff, and peers; collaborates and serves as a liaison with other academic support and student development programs, academic departments, and student affairs professionals
15% – Recruits, hires, and trains part-time staff in collaboration with the LC Leadership Team; facilitates workshops, tours, resource fairs, classroom visits and other special events for students in conjunction with the LC staff; assists with promoting the use of tutoring/academic support services
10% – Tutors students while modeling best practices in approved content area(s); develops and conducts presentations on academic support topics; performs other duties as assigned that are commensurate to grade level of position
Minimum Qualifications
Associate’s Degree from a regionally accredited institution and one (1) year of advanced program support involving program coordination, preferably in an educational setting.
OR
High School Diploma/GED and three (3) years of advanced program support involving program coordination, preferably in an educational setting.
Desired Qualifications
1. Bachelor’s degree in Education, English, ESL, or related field
2. Three (3) years tutoring experience while working in a community college setting and/or designated minority-serving institution
3. Experience designing workshops, presentations, and/or instructional materials on student success, study skills, or similar topics
4. Experience providing mentorship, formal or informal leadership, and/or employee development
5. Demonstrated evidence working with faculty, staff, and students representing a wide range of cultural backgrounds and social identities
Special Working Conditions
- Possession of a valid State of Arizona Class D driver’s license is required; must meet minimum standards regarding driving
- Travel to campus during interview/selection process will be at candidate’s own expense
- May be required to lift or carry up to 25lbs
- May be required to sit for a prolonged period of time; viewing a computer monitor
