IRIS Advisor
ABOUT THIS
POSITION
Department Summary:
The IRIS Department serves all student enrollment needs as it relates to
financial aid, financial counseling, student accounts, registration, and records for all students and serves incoming freshman as the staff
advisor for academic advising. Utilizing a case management system, IRIS provides services in three ways: 1.) Services that are front line
customer service offered at the front desk, phone and email and tend to be shorter in duration 2.) Services are in-person or phone extended
advising appointments which are longer in duration and 3.) Services which are targeted proactive advising services for students in need of
additional support. This department aims to create a welcoming space where students feel comfortable coming in to ask any question and feel
confident that they can receive accurate information. We strive to see every student for their unique strengths and challenges and help
guide them through academic success while transitioning into college.
Position Summary:
The Advisor position
exists within the IRIS department. This position exists to support and encourage student success with students from all backgrounds.
Advisors will advise students on various aspects of student success, such as academic advising and registration, student finances, financial
aid, personal wellness, and student success skills. This position will provide proactive advising through academic and personal coaching;
instructional coursework; utilization of assessments; comprehensive advising; coordination of services; and/or individualized and group
mentoring. Along with assigned advisees, Advisors are expected to maintain a high level of customer service with all students that create
appointments, walk in, and call or email.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other
related duties may be assigned.
Advising & Student Support Services
- Act as an academic advisor for a diverse
population of students, including but not limited to academically underprepared, undeclared, first generation, and non-traditional students. - Demonstrate a high level of discretion and judgment in actively assessing and advising students from all backgrounds on key
aspects of student success, such as academic advising and registration, student finances, personal wellness, and student success skills. - Interpret and apply institutional policies, procedures, and regulations related to academic, financial, and student support
programs. - Identify barriers that students face, suggest solutions to student challenges, and make appropriate internal and
external referrals. - Provide a high level of customer service and create a welcoming environment for students.

Cultivate meaningful and productive relationships with students, staff, and leaders by initiating critical conversations, having a visible
presence, and maintaining regular communication. - Regularly collaborate with university partner offices, such as Financial Aid,
Educational Access Services, Student Wellness Center, Student Services, Registrar, and Student Accounts. - Assist in coordinating
and providing proactive outreach efforts to assist in the retention goals of the university. - Responsible for documenting student
appointments and outreach efforts.
Programming & Events
- Assist with onboarding new students during new student
orientation. - Organize and design departmental events, such as major exploration events, First Gen Day, financial literacy events,
etc. - Assist with various campus events and lead presentations on IRIS resources when needed.
- Deliver instructional
coursework for supplemental courses.
Training
- Participate in regular training and professional development
activities. - Responsible for training other departments in relation to advising, financial counseling, and student support
services.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university.
- Must possess strong interpersonal skills, sound judgment, and the ability to work independently as well as be a team player.
- Demonstrated experience in managing stress in demanding customer and student-service areas.
- Strong computer skills.
Proficient with MS Office.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master’s degree from an accredited four-year college
or university. - Experience working with first-generation, low-income, academically underprepared and/or groups that are
underrepresented in higher education. - Experience in academic advising, success coaching and/or counseling/social work.
- College classroom teaching experience.
- Banner student database system experience and/or CRM Advise software.
- Experience with Strong Interest Inventory, StrengthsQuest and/or similar
- Bilingual, in English and Spanish
