support services for undergraduate Mount students. This position supports Learning Services’ overall mission of identifying and
supporting students so that they will find success at the Mount. Student support is provided via one-on-one student meetings. The primary
focus of this position is to provide academic support services that promote the success, retention, and graduation of Mount St. Mary’s
students.The successful candidate will be a member of the Learning Services team and will assist in working with all Learning
Services’ programs including disability support services, Summit Scholars (at-risk freshman), MountCares (student referral program),
and all retention and student success initiatives. The successful candidate will also be charged with coordinating support services for
international students. Our international student population is growing, and the Mount is ready for a more structured and coordinated
academic support system for this student population.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- This
position provides direct academic support to students via individual meetings to determine appropriate goals along with needed interventions
and strategies. Follow-up with students regarding their progress. Special focus given to international students. - The Learning
Services Specialist is responsible for developing and implementing learning interventions and success strategies in the areas of:
a. Time management
b. Learning styles
c. Critical reading
d. Note-taking
e. Test-taking
- Communicate effectively with students, faculty, administrators, and parents, as necessary.
- Maintain appropriate documentation
of meetings and interventions with students. - Committee membership: Academic Review Committee, Four Week Review Committee, the
MountCares Committee, and other committees as necessary. - Take care to protect the confidentiality of these records under
applicable laws, including FERPA, the ADA, and Section 504 of the Vocational Rehabilitation Act. - Represent the Department of
Learning Services during the June and August Orientation programs, Open Houses and Accepted Student Days, as necessary. - Maintain
knowledge of current trends within the field, including attendance at professional development opportunities when appropriate. - Establish effective working relationships with Learning Services staff, faculty, and administrators in order to assess student-learning
needs and to develop, implement, and monitor the academic success of students. - Communicate with the Director, Associate and
Assistant Directors, and all Learning Services and other professional staff members regarding student progress and concerns. The Learning
Specialist for Academic Support will also communicate with parents as necessary. - Other duties as assigned by the Director, Provost
or President.
Job Requirements: Education, Experience and Skills:
The appointed individual will
have a:
- Bachelor’s degree in education/special education, counseling, psychology, post-secondary student support
services, or related field. - Two years’ experience at the college level working directly in academic support and/or two
years’ experience at the high school or college level in international student mentoring or academic support. - Have knowledge
of various learning theories and academic strategies, including time management, learning styles, test-taking, note-taking, and textbook
reading. - Possess excellent communication and organizational skills.
- Be an exceptional listener and communicator who
effectively conveys information verbally and in writing. - Be able to handle multiple projects/demands and deadlines.
- Be
proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
