Job Summary/Basic Function
The learning specialist ensures that student-athletes who are academically and/or behaviorally at-risk, or who have education-impacting disabilities, receive the academic support necessary for them to succeed in the classroom. The learning specialist supervises all Athletics Department peer-based academic services, hiring, training, scheduling, and supervising all department tutors and study-tables monitors, and the learning specialist serves as department liaison to campus support services, such as the Academic Success Centers and the Office of Disability Services.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in education, counseling, human services, or related field.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Experience coordinating and developing learning programs, teaching, or tutoring students/student-athletes.
Preferred Qualifications
- Familiarity with Wright State University academic policies and programs.
Essential Functions and percent of time
35% – Meet weekly with at-risk student-athletes to assess academic progress, to discuss academic challenges, and to provide instruction regarding best practices to mitigate those challenges (e.g. study skills, time management, note-taking skills, etc.). Create weekly academic schedules for at-risk student-athletes. Partner with coaching staffs and with advising staff to ensure scheduled academic support creates no conflicts with class attendance or with sport participation. Conduct follow-up meetings with student-athletes throughout the week as needed.
20% – Collaborate with Athletics advising staff to assess academic preparedness of incoming student-athletes. Arrange academic support appropriate to the student-athletes’ assessed needs, including campus services (e.g. Academic Success Centers and Office of Disability Services, etc.) and department resources (e.g. study tables, tutoring, etc.). Serve as department liaison to the Academic Success Centers, Office of Disability Services, and other campus support services.
15% – Provide frequent verbal and written updates to coaching staffs and to advising staff regarding academic progress of at-risk student-athletes, attendance at study tables, advising appointments, tutoring appointments, etc. Collaborate with advising staff and with coaching staffs to make adjustments to student-athletes study tables schedules, levels of academic support, and academic support schedules as needed.
15% – Hire, train, supervise, and schedule department tutors. Ensure all tutoring is conducted in compliance with Wright State University Academic Integrity Policy and NCAA rules and regulations. Meet routinely with department tutors to discuss academic progress of student-athletes and ongoing academic support needs of student-athletes. Maintain academic support budget for all student-athlete tutoring and supplemental instruction.
15% – Hire, train, supervise, and schedule department study-tables monitors. Ensure study-tables monitors provide student-athletes a quiet, monitored study-tables environment, free from distractions and from behaviors inconsistent with quiet study. Provide weekly study tables attendance reports to advising staff and coaching staffs. Maintain academic support budget for all study-tables personnel and activities.
Working Conditions
Hours will be based upon students’ schedules and academic needs (nights and weekends may be required).
