Job Description
Position purpose
The Learning Specialist is an educational professional who works closely with college students
to enhance their learning skills, academic performance, and overall success. The primary goal of a College Learning Specialist is to provide
personalized support and guidance to students, helping them develop effective learning strategies, oversee the on-campus tutoring program.
The Learning Specialist is also the Section 504 and ADA coordinator for the College. The position also supports general functions in
Academic Success.
Major Responsibilities/Duties/Functions/Tasks
Academic Success
Center:
- Starfish and Service Referral Management:
- Serve as primary manager for
the Starfish early intervention platform. This includes, but is not limited to: (1) developing, and maintaining policies for Starfish
service referrals; (2) configuring the platform for optimal interaction between students, faculty and services; and (3) ensuring that
offices are responding to referrals made through the platform. - Provide regular training sessions to faculty, staff and
students. - Meet regularly with the Office of Advisement, College Possible Success Coaches, Office of Opportunity Programs and Math
and Writing Centers to discuss interventions, outstanding referrals and additional technical needs. - Meet and coordinate with
departments to expand usage of the platform across the institution. - Regularly meet with consultants to resolve technical issues and
add additional functionality as needed. - Provide updates and reports on usage for assessment and data sharing.
- Serve as primary manager for
- Peer-Tutoring:
- Oversee the day-to-day operations of the tutoring center, including
scheduling, resource allocation, and maintenance of tutoring records and systems. - Develop and implement policies and procedures for
tutor and student interactions, maintaining a supportive and inclusive learning environment. - Recruit, hire, and train a diverse
team of tutors, assessing their qualifications, subject expertise, and interpersonal skills. - Provide ongoing training and
professional development opportunities to tutors, focusing on tutoring techniques, effective communication, and student engagement. - Conduct regular tutor evaluations, providing feedback, guidance, and support to enhance tutor performance and ensure adherence to
tutoring center standards. - Foster a collaborative and supportive environment among tutors, promoting peer learning and sharing of
best practices.
- Oversee the day-to-day operations of the tutoring center, including
- Academic Support Services:
- Collaborate with faculty and academic
departments to identify tutoring needs and align tutoring services with curriculum goals. - Coordinate specialized tutoring support
for specific subjects or courses, including identifying subject-matter experts and facilitating targeted tutoring sessions. - Assist
in the development and implementation of workshops, study groups, and supplemental instruction programs to enhance students’ academic
success. - Stay informed about tutoring methodologies, learning strategies, and academic support resources to provide relevant
guidance to tutors and students. - Promote the tutoring center’s services and resources to students through orientation events,
campus-wide initiatives, and marketing efforts. - Develop and implement outreach strategies to increase student awareness and usage
of tutoring services. - Collaborate with student organizations, residence halls, and academic departments to organize and deliver
tutoring-related workshops, events, and study groups. - Collect and analyze data on student satisfaction, usage patterns, and
outcomes to continuously improve tutoring services and assess their impact on student success.
- Collaborate with faculty and academic
- Section
504/ADA Coordinator:- Serve as coordinator of Section 504 and disability services.
- Review documentation to
develop accommodation plans for students. - Coordinate the educational accommodations for students.
- Notify faculty of
relevant accommodations.
- Data Management and Reporting:
- Maintain accurate records of
tutoring sessions, student attendance, and tutor performance, ensuring confidentiality and compliance with privacy regulations. - Prepare regular reports on tutoring center activities, usage statistics, and student success indicators for internal and external
stakeholders. - Utilize data management systems or tutoring software to track and analyze tutoring center data for planning,
assessment, and decision-making purposes.

- Academic Success Division-wide Responsibilities:
- Actively participate in special events of importance to the Division, including but not limited to, New Student Orientations,
Admissions Open Houses and Express Registration events. These events may take place in-person or on Zoom. Some are scheduled for evenings or
weekends. - All other duties as assigned.

- Education and/or Experience Requirements:
- Bachelor’s Degree in education or counseling. Related degrees will be considered.
- Professional
Skills:- Ability to multitask and complete various projects with competing deadlines.
- Ability to interact with
various campus constituents in a professional and courteous manner. - Solid communication skills – written and verbal.
- Experience with delivering presentations for groups.
- Accurate and exceptional attention to detail.
- Proficient with
Microsoft Office suite, specifically Word and Excel. - Strong customer service skills.
- Reasoning
Ability- Ability to review situation/material and determine next course of action.
- Work
environment and physical functions
This position is located in an office environment. Generally, an employee needs to
be able to sit, stand and navigate within the office area. The office equipment, either individually used or shared with a department is the
responsibility of all employees.
Preferred:
- Master’s degree in education, counseling or related
field. - Training in Section 504 and disability services coordination.
- Demonstratable knowledge of various educational
pedagogies, including online pedagogies. - Experience in using an student information system (e.g., SONIS) and early intervention
system (e.g., Starfish). - 1+ year experience in teaching or tutoring.
- 1+ year experience in higher education.
- 1+
year experience in supervising multiple individuals.
