Job Summary

The University of Colorado Boulder Athletic department encourages
applications for a Licensed Athletic Counselor with a Multicultural Focus! This position will assist the Director,
Associate Director, and Assistant Director in the delivery of general psychological services to student-athletes as well as provide
consultation and training to coaches, athletic department staff, and student-athletes within the realm of psychological services and
diversity, equity and inclusion.
For this position, we are seeking candidates whose background, expertise and dedication reflect the work
within and among Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) student-athletes, and understand the impact that experiences of
marginalization, inequality, and prejudice can have on student-athletes, and are experienced in therapy, consultation, and outreach to
address, and/or minimize this impact.
Part of this role will focus on engaging athletic and campus colleagues in developing relationships
and programming to engage and improve BIPOC student-athletes’ experiences in athletics and on campus. Staff from both the Center for
Psychological Health and Performance and within athletics will partner in this work and it is intended as an ongoing team effort. This
position will partner closely with the athletic department’s Associate Athletic Director for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion; Diversity,
Equity, and Inclusion Council; and campus’ Office of Diversity, Equity, and Community Engagement. Additionally, the Athletics Counselor will
have experience in diversity and inclusion programming and clinical expertise in working with traditionally under-resourced populations. The

What Your Key
Responsibilities Will Be

Clinical:

  • Responsible for assessing and treating common psychological issues such as
    anxiety/depression, eating disorders, substance abuse, grief, sexual trauma, and personality disorders.
  • Provide consulting and
    outreach services to coaches, athletic trainers, academic staff, and other administrative personnel regarding the psychological well-being
    of individual student-athletes and team members.
  • Serve as a resource for diversity and inclusion work within the department,
    including participation in ongoing cultural outreach efforts.
  • Work closely in collaboration with team physicians regarding
    appropriate NCAA documentation as well as making medication recommendations for disorders/disabilities.
  • Participate in
    student-athlete pre-performance physical examinations by introducing behavioral health and how to access services.
  • Identify
    psychological and performance education outreach needs and offer relevant programming.
  • Provide crisis intervention and emergency
    services in situations involving individual student-athletes or teams within the athletic department.
  • Provide consultation to
    administration and/or medical staff regarding crisis or treatment recommendations as appropriate.
  • Medical staff consultation,
    interdisciplinary management, and treatment team participation as needed.
  • Engage in required treatment consultation with community
    providers for student-athletes.
  • Develop and implement individual performance optimization consultation sessions to
    individuals.
  • Deliver team sport psychology sessions, including developing and delivery of program specific to sport and their
    student-athletes.
  • Provide coach consultation regarding mental health, team dynamics, and high-performance best practices for
    respective programs.
  • Contribute to the development of an environment for team members and student-athletes that is healthy, safe,
    equitable, and culturally sensitive.
  • Attend assigned team practices, competitions, team events, and travel as
    needed.
  • Participate in special assignments and other committees as assigned to support the development of best practices and
    high-performance programs.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor and/or the needs of the department.

Diversity,
Equity, and Community Engagement:

  • Engage with athletic department and campus colleagues, as well as our various teams in
    athletics, developing relationships and programming to engage and improve BIPOC student-athletes experiences in athletics and on
    campus.
  • Increase engagement of student-athletes using PHP services, specifically within under-utilized communities within CU
    Athletics.
  • Identify psychological, diversity and inclusion educational outreach needs in the athletics department and offer relevant
    programming to staff and student-athletes.
  • Serve as a resource for diversity and inclusion work within the athletics department,
    including development and implementation of ongoing cultural outreach efforts.
  • Liaise with the athletic departments Diversity and
    Inclusion Staff, Diversity and Inclusion Committee, and campus Office of Diversity, Equity, and Community Engagement and Office of DEI.

Administration:

  • Develop and manage relationships with organizational units that can assist and/or improve the
    mental health services provided to BIPOC student-athletes.

Medical Documentation and Record Keeping:

  • Evaluate the
    effectiveness of diversity, equity, and community engagement, and make necessary adjustments and improvements.
  • Participate in
    continuing education and professional association activities related to performance of job functions and the maintenance of
    skills.
  • Participate in professional organizations and activities, workshops, seminars, and develop programs related to
    expertise.
  • Represent the University of Colorado Boulder and the CU Department of Athletics at University, State, Regional, National,
    and International conferences and/or meetings, as assigned.

Departmental Responsibilities:

  • Understand and align
    with state statutes governing the ethical provision of psychological care, as well as those rules governing the Athletic Department,
    University, PAC-12, and the NCAA.
  • Demonstrate a thorough knowledge of and remain current on rules and regulations of the NCAA and
    the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) regarding banned drugs and restricted substances, particularly NCAA by-law 16.5.2. (g) &
    (h).
  • Adhere to the APA Code of Ethics and statues of the State of Colorado.
  • Adhere to principles stated in the Athletic
    Departments Mission Statement and promote loyalty to the mission by all staff and student-athletes under their supervision.

What We Can Offer

  • The salary range is
    $65,000 – $80,000 annually.

What We Require

  • Master’s Degree in Counseling Psychology or Clinical Psychology, Counseling, or Social Work. Doctorate degree
    may substitute for experience.
  • At least three years of clinical experience and licensed as a counselor or social worker, OR
    license-eligible and ability to obtain license in the State of Colorado within six (6) months of employment.
  • Experience in
    multi-cultural counseling and work with clients from a diverse set of backgrounds and under-resourced communities.
