Clarksburg, West Virginia, West Virginia, This position is located in the Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Program of Clinical Support Service at VA Clarksburg Healthcare System – Louis A. Johnson VA Medical Center in Clarksburg, WV. The Medical Technician is responsible for performing a wide range of emergency, routine, complex. and specialized test procedures in Clinical Chemistry, Coagulation, Hematology, Blood Bank, Microbiology and Urinalysis with minimal on-site supervision. Minimum Requirement: The following are minimum requirements for appointment as a Medical Technician in the Veterans Health Administration (VHA). One of the following minimum requirement criteria must be met to be qualified for this position. Specialized Experience (GS-07): You must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA’s) to successfully perform the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (i. e. , GS-04).

Specialized experience is: (a) Technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings or (b) technical support work in a closely related field, e. g. , biological laboratory technician work that required application of the methods and techniques for the position to be filled. At this level, specialized experience should include experience performing a variety of relatively standardized tests, examinations, and determinations. The procedures and techniques are well-established but involve many meticulous sequential steps to complete a test; and following written procedures which give carefully detailed instructions on each step of the assigned test and examinations. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have one full year of graduate education only in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position. NOTE: One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent 1 year of full-time study. If that information cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours should be considered as satisfying the 1 year of full-time study requirement.

Part-time graduate education is creditable in accordance with its relationship to a year of full-time study at the school attended. The Medical Technician performs technical and non-technical duties in accordance with the CAP/JCAHO regulatory agencies. Major duties and responsibilities include but not limited to: Performing technical procedures that include but are not limited to: automated chemistry panels, blood banking, complete blood counts, coagulation tests, urinalysis, body fluid analysis, peripheral smear evaluation, point-of-care testing and special studies Evaluating requested procedures to determine the suitability of specimens for analysis, requesting new specimens if necessary Advising laboratory personnel or healthcare workers on the appropriate collection and handling of specimens; preparing specimens for analysis and/or dispatch ensuring that the physiologic state of the specimen is maintained; and following the guidelines outlined in the Laboratory Information Manual and appropriate procedure manuals for specimen handling Preparing reagents and primary reference materials; selecting, performing, evaluating and monitoring the performance of routine and complex procedures using manual and/or micro-processor controlled instruments in accordance with established laboratory medicine protocols Recognizing and reacting to indicators of malfunctions; locating and implements troubleshooting and corrective actions; obtaining analytical data such as photometric end-points, rate reaction or digital readouts and converts them to appropriate prescribed units for reporting; reviewing and correlating data to verify validity and accuracy of results; verifying laboratory reports identifying sample results and determinable factors; and reporting results to appropriate individuals in a manner suitable to the nature of the request Calibrating, standardizing, adjusting, performing routine preventative maintenance and documents service on the instruments and verifying correct instrument operation using established procedures and quality control checks (mechanical, optical, photometric, and electrometric) Identifying the cause of common problems and makes minor and sometimes complex instrument repairs, which may include automated analyzers, centrifuges, spectrophotometer, and microscopes Performing daily quality control to assure that the reagents, equipment, and temperatures are within the recommended guidelines; identifying quality control variations and initiating corrective action to correct the quality control problem Documenting all quality control activities and maintaining accurate records in compliance with accrediting agencies such as CAP, JCAHO, and CLIA Screening test results to detect discrepancies, artifacts, and pathologic change that may warrant additional testing; performing repeat or additional testing to clarify or confirm abnormal results as necessary Correlating patient test results with other laboratory and/or patient data to ensure the accuracy of the result using established quality management procedures and following established protocol, he/she is communicating critical and certain abnormal test results to the clinician Preparing specimens for send-out and contacting the appropriate transportation service to pick up any lab work to be done outside this facility including packaging specimens for shipment in accordance with regulatory agency requirements Performing phlebotomy on in-patients and out-patients following established procedures Work Schedule: 40 hours a week.
