Sioux Falls, South Dakota, South Dakota, The Medical Technician serves as a generalist in medical technology with responsibility for performing procedures in the areas of chemistry, hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, immunology, immunohematology (blood banking), serology, microbiology, and specimen procurement and processing. The generalist medical technician rotates with other generalist technologists and technicians through the above mentioned areas. IN ORDER TO QUALIFY FOR THIS POSITION AT THE GS-6 LEVEL YOU MUST MEET THE FOLLOWING: ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY: In accordance with 38 U. S. C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to meet the requirements of this position. ~AND~ SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: You must be possess at least one year of specialized experience that equipped you with the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of this position, and that is typically in or related to the work of this Medical Technician position. To be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-5 grade level in the Federal Service. Specialized experience includes: (a) Technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic, and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings or (b) technical support work in a closely related field, e.

g. , biological laboratory technician work, that required application of the methods and techniques for the position to be filled. Additional specialized experience includes performing laboratory duties in chemistry, hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, immunology, immunohematology (blood banking), serology, microbiology, and specimen procurement and processing; performing CLIA high complexity, moderate complexity and waived tests; preparing slides, smears, cultures, etc for examination; performing and interpreting microscopic evaluations of body fluid specimens. (THIS EXPERIENCE MUST BE SUPPORTED BY YOUR RESUME TO BE CREDITABLE. ) ~OR~ SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE: You must have successfully completed one-half year (9 semester hours) of graduate level education in subjects directly related to the position. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business or technical school, junior college, college or university for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite. Education cannot be credited without documentation. Performing CLIA high complexity, moderate complexity and waived tests. Performing the full range of routine and emergency testing procedures. Handling specimens in accordance with current information in the specimen collection manual to insure that the physiologic state of the specimen is maintained.

Identifying unusual results or discrepancies/conditions which cause erroneous results (instrument malfunctions, conditions of test performance, specimen unsuitability, reaction systems and/or test procedures used). Preparing slides, smears, cultures, etc. , of extremely delicate or otherwise volatile specimens, using critical concern for the quality of the specimen given the procedure to be used for test or examination. Using a high degree of laboratory expertise to determine the validity of results and the potential causes for invalid results. Performing additional tests to clarify or confirm abnormal patient results. Accurately records and reports test results. Performing other duties as assigned.
