Position Purpose

The Museum Preparator supports the museum’s priorities through the timely and thorough completion of all aspects of exhibition installation, works in close consultation with lead preparator and exhibitions manager to create installations that meet museum requirements, executes safe handling and movement of artwork.

Required Qualifications – Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

  • Two years of relevant experience in museum exhibition installations.
  • Knowledge of matting, hinging, and framing of works on paper, object mount-making, lighting, or the presentation of new media.
  • Knowledge of safe art-handling practices.
  • Demonstrated understanding of methods and practices of exhibition installation.
  • Proficiency with standard office editing and scheduling platforms.
  • Ability to participate in a team-based environment.
  • Ability to perform all routine installation tasks, handling objects, power tools, ladders.
  • A valid driver’s license, and the ability to obtain and maintain Dartmouth Driver Certification, to drive museum vehicles to transport artwork.
  • Commitment to diversity and to serving the needs of a diverse community.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or the equivalent combination of education and experience, with a focus on art, art history, or material culture.
  • Advanced experience in matting, hinging, and framing, or construction, crating, and case-building.
  • Experience fabricating scale models and working with computer-based architectural modeling programs.
  • Proficiency in Adobe design applications.

Art Preparation – Prepares works of art for exhibition. Responsibilities include, depending on area of expertise, co-developing and creating mounts and supports necessary for the safe display of all objects; accomplishing the archival matting and framing of works on paper; performs collaborative development, installation, and maintenance of new media presentations (video, audio, film, and computer-based).

Exhibition Installation – Collaboratively plans and performs all aspects of museum exhibition installations in the galleries to meet curatorial, collections management, and exhibition design standards in support of the museum’s mission and priorities. Participates in the development and implementation of installation production schedules to assign responsibilities and assure realistic timelines.

Object Study Support – Supports the museum’s commitment to teaching with objects by supporting all classroom and museum-based programs. Helps provide solutions to scheduling conflicts. Transports, installs, and maintains works of art in the museum’s collection storage areas. Performs installation and maintenance requirements for art on campus.

Installation Planning – Assists curators, exhibitions manager, and lead preparator to develop installation plans through participation in group discussions. Supports all internal art handling projects and contracted work as needed.
