Job Summary:
The Learning Assistant works closely
with faculty and staff to provide supplemental guidance inside and outside the classroom for STEM students. The Learning Assistant leads
group discussions and problem solving sessions designed to improve student learning of course material. This is a temporary grant-funded
position.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Provides
academic support to students and/or additional support to faculty and staff - Facilitates active learning activities in the classroom
- Serves as a role model and motivator for students to achieve and assists with their academic needs
- Engages in weekly
planning sessions with lead faculty member for assigned course - Receives training in course content, pedagogy and
activities - Completes status reports
- Maintains a time and activity log of Learning Assistant activities
- Monitors
student progress or laboratory conditions and needs - Guides students through the use of educational software and equipment in
labs - Provide extra assistance to students with special needs
- Attends all class sessions for the course section
assigned - Performs other duties as assigned
Minimum Requirements:
- High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent and completion of one (1) specified college disciplined
course - Must be enrolled in a regionally accredited educational institution and in good academic standing
- Must have a
cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 average - Must have completed the assigned course (or a more advanced course in the same sequence) with
a grade of 3.0 or higher - Knowledge and understanding of College organization, goals and objectives, and policies and
procedures - Possess the ability to engage students in course activities and materials
- Possess excellent oral and written
communication skills - Be detail-oriented and highly organized
- Possess strong interpersonal skills
- Proficiency in
Microsoft applications - Ability to demonstrate genuine motivation in dealing with people
- Ability to effectively speak and
present information in front of a group - Ability to work flexible schedule including evening and weekend assignments
- Ability
to work well in a multi-ethnic and multi-cultural environment with students, faculty and staff
