Duties and Responsibilities
Duties and responsibilities of a mechanical engineer Grade I will involve: –
Advanced servicing, repair and maintenance of light and heavy machinery and equipments;
Construction plant, earth moving equipment (excavators), off the road trucks, commercial vehicles, including adjustment, balancing and relining brakes;
Adjustment of Toe-in, camber, castor, Wheel balancing, checking of bearings, diagnosing use modern equipment, correcting simple faults likely to occur in the electrical system of earth moving equipment, overhauling and setting up clutches;
Diagnosis of general faults in Diesel/petrol engines, timing distributors, dismantling, cleaning and adjusting of carburetors;
Setting clearances and assembling of sub-assemblies after overhauls, cleaning of air locks in diesel fuel systems, removal of injectors and heater plugs;
Replacing and timing of phase-injector pumps, use of workshop manuals (books) when necessary;
Care for maintenance tools of the trade and other trade related work as may be assigned by Officer-in-charge/supervisor.
Requirements for Appointment
Direct appointment to this grade will be made from candidates with at least KCSE mean grade D+ (plus) or equivalent and are in possession of;
National Trade Test Certificates grade I for plant mechanics with a proven practical experience of having served for three (3) years as a mechanic with grade II.
OR
Relevant Preliminary level apprentice Certificate awarded by the Directorate of Industrial Training, with a proven practical experience of having served for three (3) years as a mechanic with grade II.
OR
Relevant preliminary level certificate awarded by the Kenya Institute of Highway and Building Technology, with a proven practical experience of having served for three (3)years as a Plant Mechanic grade II.
Terms of Service: Permanent and Pensionable.
