Work Schedule

This is a regular, part-time support staff position that works approximately 1,560 hours per year. Days/hours of work are Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, 4:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., Friday, 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Saturday 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. year-round, with flexible or extended hours as needed by the College or department.

Position Summary

In accordance with the mission and vision of Kellogg Community College, the Process Specialist, Visual Arts works with faculty and directs/trains student workers in meeting departmental goals and objectives to support student success, retention, and completion. The Process Specialist works independently day-to-day to guide/educate/prepare students in the operation of the Visual Arts equipment, software, and multiple labs, and assists students in any coursework material. The Process Specialist works independently to provide the day-to-day and project-specific supplies for the labs ensuring full readiness for each day, and complete daily and semester-end safety and cleanliness checklists to maintain the facilities, equipment, and related inventory. During evenings and Saturday hours of operations, the Process Specialist serves as the key point of contact in the Davidson building.

Physical Demands

The job responsibilities are performed in an office area and presentation venues. Travel by car required. The job has intermittent periods during which continuous physical exertion is required, such as walking, standing, sitting, stooping, bending, climbing, lifting material or equipment, some of which may be heavy or awkward (8 – 45 pounds). Typically requires regular use of one or more physical senses of medium intensity and long duration. Must meet reasonable deadlines, quotas or demands for accuracy, and, may be involved in some mildly unpleasant situations.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Associate degree AND at least two (2+) years of relevant experience OR one (1) year of post-secondary education AND three or more (3+) years of relevant experience OR four or more (4+) years of relevant experience.
  2. Ability to work with MS Word, Excel, and Outlook, Adobe Photoshop, Capture One or similar level applications at an intermediate level.
  3. Two (2) years of photographic equipment and processing experience.

Proposed Salary

According to the published support staff salary schedule, Classification Pay Grade 14, 2023-2024 hourly wage range, step one $21.66 to step six $27.72. Internal applicants may refer to Article 22, Section 5C.

Essential Function

Description

  • Engage with students (one-on-one or in groups) and collaborate with faculty to educate students in fine art fundamentals, aesthetics, and procedures.
  • Instruct students in the operation and use of cameras (film and/or digital); darkroom processes and equipment for film and alternative procedures; computer software and digital printers; and mounting and matting procedures of photographic work, etc., while addressing aesthetics and craftmanship, as needed, throughout each process with students.

  • Develop, anticipate, and delegate work tasks for student workers (including their ongoing training) in the areas of critical operations and safety of equipment; darkroom processes and preparing photochemistry; equipment checkout; maintenance of equipment and labs; and assisting students, etc.

Description

  • Work independently for majority of time. Seventy percent (70%) of job is after 5 p.m. and on Saturdays when no other KCC full-time employees are in the Davidson Building.
  • Engage with diverse groups and individuals, including current and potential students, adjunct faculty, visitors, donors, and gallery artists, etc., serving their needs in a manner that KCC programs, as well as the mission and vision of the college are promoted.
  • Conduct tours of photo, art, and graphic design departments for groups and individuals.

Equipment Cage

Description

  • Manage equipment cage and checkout system. Check out photographic equipment to students and track outstanding equipment.
  • Monitor equipment database, devising, creating, and implementing ongoing improvements and revisions to accurately manage equipment checkout and equipment inventory. Receive, appraise, catalog, and distribute donated equipment.
  • Provide inhouse troubleshooting and repair of equipment, and/or source third-party vendors when more complex equipment repairs are required.
  • Maintain subject matter content/knowledge in order to support a variety of students’ needs and instructor requirements.

Labs, Facilities, and Supplies

Description

  • Monitor and daily facilitate cleanliness and lab safety in darkrooms, studio lighting labs, equipment cage, presentation room, and digital photo/computer labs, etc., ensuring overnight security, by locking up labs on weekdays, and opening/closing on Saturdays.
  • Coordinate technical knowledge, Safety Data Sheet binders, Global Harmonization System labels, photochemistry formulae, etc.
  • Anticipate needs in photo labs and ensure labs are equipped/supplied: prepare photochemistry (from stock solutions) for daily use; weigh and mix chemicals (e.g., toners, developers, etc.) for specialized use; prepare and provide photo supplies for Intro, Intermediate, Advanced, Alternative Photo classes and for Digital Photo class, and Photography Appreciation class.
  • Monitor student and building needs, informing appropriate college personnel (department chair, faculty, institutional facilities, information services and campus security, etc.) when required with respect to building maintenance, technical, and safety and security issues, etc. (e.g., raku firings for ceramics lab.) Monitor photographic educational and lab supplies and gallery supplies.
  • Research and recommend supplies and equipment as needed for photo instructional coursework. Request quotes from vendors, prepare and submit purchase requests for Photography, Gallery, Ceramic, and other Art Supplies.
  • Receive and distribute supplies upon delivery. Foster and maintain internal and external vendor relations.

Gallery and Display Case

Description

  • Install and strike (dismantle) gallery shows.
  • Between shows, evaluate and prepare gallery walls for the next show, repairing and painting walls, as needed, to meet gallery standards.
  • Curate Davidson Building display cases to showcase KCC and the photography program.
  • Organize and maintain gallery storage room.
  • Photograph artwork and student award recipients to document gallery shows, including the annual student art show.
