Wilmington, Delaware, Nemours is seeking a Science Writer/Communications Specialist (hybrid) to join our Nemours Children’s Health team in Wilmington, DE. Nemours Children’s Health has launched a bold strategy to redefine children’s health to create the healthiest generations of children. This strategy is uniquely intertwined with our new brand designed to articulate how Nemours Children’s is advancing the health of children by going “well beyond medicine. ” Nemours Children’s Health is seeking a Science Writer/Communications Specialist to support the research and medical storytelling that showcases Nemours Children’s innovation and high-quality clinical care for children. The Science Writer/Communications Specialist will be responsible for story mining and developing communications strategies to promote Nemours scientific research and best-in-class clinical care to the public. An integral part of the Public Relations team, the ideal candidate will have a gift for words with the ability to translate complex medical and scientific concepts for the media, parents and caregivers, donors, community leaders, and business leaders, among others. Through the development of engaging content, this role will help inform stakeholders, influence consumers and changemakers, all in an effort to garner support in our quest to change children’s health for good. This candidate must be a self-starter who has a panache for building relationships throughout an organization. They should have the ability to work easily with both executive and physician leadership as well as bench scientists and clinicians to uncover the great stories that are told in a way to enhance the reputations of both the organization and participating physicians and researchers. This person should possess a firm understanding of how to create on-brand content that will educate, inspire and propel action for the intended audience(s).
The candidate should be well-versed in AP style and scientific communications practices. Essential Functions 1. Write clear, concise and accurate scientific content for various media including press releases, blog posts, white papers, and talking points/remarks, social media, internal communications, website and marketing materials as appropriate. 2. Identify worthy scientific discoveries, medical innovation and relevant industry trends that will resonate with the lay public, and collaborate with Nemours researchers, clinicians and other subject matter experts to promote their work. 3. Review research studies and abstracts to determine opportunities for promotion, create the strategy in collaboration with PR and other communications colleagues and lead the content creation. Partner with designers to bring communications visuals to life. 4. Support the development of presentations and speaking remarks for Nemours executives giving talks within academic settings.
This includes but is not limited to Nemours chief executive officer and president. Ensure accuracy of content and citations to sources. 5. Serve as an editor and proofer on behalf of Communications to ensure written materials are consistent in voice, tone and style and are error-free while following Nemours brand guidelines. Bachelor’s Degree required. Master’s degree in scientific writing and/or corresponding experience as a scientist preferred. Biomedical scientists who have moved to science journalism should have at least 3-5 years of writing/editor experience. Communications professionals should have at least 10 years experience.
