The Senior Philanthropy Writer serves on the Donor Communications team, part of the Experience & Engagement team within the Philanthropy department, and reports to the executive director of Donor Communications. The Donor Communications team produces proposals, reports, stewardship materials, talking points, event collateral, annual giving pieces, and other materials to support Philanthropy’s fundraising and communications goals. The Senior Philanthropy Writer will conceptualize, research, write, and edit donor communications that convey the promise of Fred Hutch’s lifesaving work and the impact of private support. This role requires versatility and the ability to tailor materials to various audiences and circumstances. While the primary focus is proposals and reports for principal and major gifts, the Senior Philanthropy Writer will also provide editorial review of annual giving materials, create event and stewardship collateral, and support related efforts as needed. Working collaboratively with department leaders, fundraisers, and writers, the Senior Philanthropy Writer will (1) make a strong case for investing in Fred Hutch’s strategic priorities, (2) develop materials tailored to our prospect and donor audiences, (3) synthesize complex information into language that resonates with donors and key stakeholders, and (4) provide both proactive and reactive writing support. The Senior Philanthropy Writer will also take initiative, collaborate with multiple team members on numerous projects simultaneously, and navigate a complex organization. They will maintain a high level of professionalism, be flexible with changing priorities, and remain composed under the pressure of deadlines.

Responsibilities Responsibilities and essential job functions include but are not limited to the following: Partner with department leaders, frontline fundraisers, researchers and clinicians, and agency partners to develop strategies and content for prospect and donor audiences. Research, write, and edit a range of materials for donors and prospects, including: Proposals for principal and major gifts. Stewardship reports. Collateral that supports frontline fundraisers, such as cases for support, topic briefs, leadership letters, emails, and web content. Event talking points and collateral, such as invitations and post-event recaps. Inform the content strategy and conduct editorial review of direct response materials. Develop compelling, accurate, and credible content that is consistent with Fred Hutch priorities, and ensure written materials are effectively organized and presented. Synthesize or translate complex scientific content into accessible narratives that align with prospects’ and donors’ interests, priorities, and knowledge. Collaborate with researchers, clinicians, recipients of donor funds, and other stakeholders to ensure the accuracy and completeness of content. Work with Philanthropy colleagues and the Marketing & Communications team to uphold Fred Hutch’s brand, messaging, and visual identity standards in donor materials.

Develop and maintain knowledge of Fred Hutch’s work, priorities, and fundraising opportunities. As needed, update systems and tools to track proposal and report project status. Qualifications Candidates should submit a cover letter and writing sample with their application to be considered. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s degree desired. Professional experience will be considered in lieu of bachelor’s degree. Six or more years of formal writing experience. Experience writing for donor audiences. Experience writing about health or scientific topics. Excellent editorial skills, lively and engaging writing style, and demonstrated ability to translate complex scientific information into communications suitable for a lay audience. Proficiency with MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Preferred Qualifications Nonprofit fundraising experience or knowledge. Experience working in a campaign environment. Proficiency with Adobe InDesign. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Outstanding persuasive writing skills. Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality work. Excellent proofreading skills; familiarity with common style manuals. Strong customer-service orientation; aptitude for collaborative problem-solving. Ability to work on multiple, complex projects with a diverse team of colleagues; ability to build productive relationships and work in a team environment. Strong organizational skills; ability to manage multiple priorities and meet short- and long-term deadlines without sacrificing quality; ability to flex with changing priorities. Strong work ethic; commitment to managing time and resources to ensure work is completed efficiently.

Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information. This position is patient facing and/or requires access to Fred Hutch clinical facilities. As such, full COVID-19 vaccination is required as a condition of employment, without exception. Booster doses are strongly recommended but not required. If declining a booster, completion of the COVID-19 Vaccination Status Form Questionnaire and COVID-19 Booster Declination Training is required. The annual base salary range for this position is from $81,979 to $122,969 and pay offered will be based on experience and qualifications.
