Pay Grade/Pay Range: 53.53, $19.97-24.96/hr *Actual pay depends on qualifications

Position Summary: Tutor students in various Physics courses taught at Johnson County Community College. Other responsibilities include referring students to appropriate resources, assist students with computer software necessary for the courses, help with the basic math skills to solve problems in Physics, mentor new tutors, work in outreach programs and other duties as requested by the supervisor.

Required Qualifications:

• A bachelor’s degree with successful completion of a two-semester sequence of calculus based introductory physics as well as a course in mechanics and a course in electricity and magnetism
• At least one year of tutoring/teaching experience
• Must be familiar with laboratory techniques
• Must be able to help with computer programs
• Require good communication skills, including listening with understanding and patience
• Ability to explain concepts and solving word problems in Physics, both orally and in written form in a one to one or small group setting

Preferred Qualifications:

• Degree in Physics
• Two years of tutoring/teaching experience

Position Details: Job duties include but are not limited to:

• TUTOR STUDENTS IN PHYSICS – Help students understand concepts in physics and solve problems by relating the course material to what they already know, using real life examples and reviewing the math skills required.
• REFER & AID STUDENTS IN PROPER USE OF RESOURCES- Provide assistance to look up reliable information online as well as in books for Physics and technical assistance.
• ASSIST IN THE TRAINING AND MENTORING OF NEW TUTORS- Help new tutors learn the best practices in tutoring, the available resources in the SRC and the policies and procedures of the SRC.
• PARTICPATE IN SRC OUTREACH & PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS- Assist the SRC in outreach programs maintaining a high degree of professional preparation.
• ASSIST IN DAILY ACTIVITIES OF THE CENTER- Provide assistance in checking out models and books, abide by the policies of the center, respect diversity among students and other tutors.
• FOLLOW GOOD WORK ETHICS- Exhibit good work ethics by being reliable and dedicated.
