Appointment Minimum Requirements:

 National Diploma (NQF 6) in Communications/Media Studies/ Journalism/Public Relations or relevant
equivalent 5 years’ relevant experience,

 Bachelor’s degree (NQF 7) in Communications/ Media Studies/ Journalism or equivalent

Primary Function:

The External Communications Specialist is responsible for managing public relations, disseminating information, and addressing media inquiries, and councillors’ information concerns. They are also proficient in strategizing and executing impactful social media campaigns and advertising and advocacy initiatives to promote the organization’s objectives.

Key Responsibilities:

 Develop and implement effective corporate communication strategies to enhance the organization’s brand image and reputation.
 Manage external communications platforms & channels, including drafting and distributing speeches for the CEO, political principals, and City Power executives, memos, reports, newsletters, and other relevant materials.
Create compelling content, such as press releases, for distribution to mass media outlets or the company’s website.
 Organize and coordinate initiatives, events, Cllr meetings, and press conferences to ensure effective communication with external stakeholders.
 Act as a liaison with the media, handling requests for interviews, statements, and other media-related interactions.
 Build and maintain relationships with advocates, including influencers and key individuals to support positive public perception and engagement.
 Collaborate with marketing professionals to develop engaging copy for advertisements, articles, and other promotional materials.
 Handle crisis communication and perform “damage control” in cases of negative publicity, ensuring the organization’s reputation is protected.
 Assist in resolving disputes with the public or external vendors, councillors, employing effective communication and conflict resolution techniques.
Support the communication of strategies or messages from senior leadership, ensuring alignment and consistent messaging throughout the organization.
