Job Summary
Department Purpose
The College of Biological Sciences (CBS) Biology Academic Success Center (BASC) has overall responsibility for the design, development, and implementation of the administration of the undergraduate degree-granting programs in CBS as specified by the faculty, as well as outreach, recruitment, diversity, retention, and other student activities. This includes: – the design and delivery of academic advising and educational enhancement programs for students;- serving as a primary information resource for students, faculty, staff, and the general public;- interpreting, analyzing, and implementing a wide variety of Academic Senate regulations and administrative policies in evaluating student petitions, assessing individual academic performance, and progress toward satisfaction of degree requirements;- making decisions on academic disqualification from the University and readmission;- analyzing and authorizing baccalaureate degree certification;- assisting faculty with undergraduate program reviews as needed; and- consulting on and coordinating the operation of the CBS faculty governance system for undergraduate matters. The BASC monitors the progress of and advises all CBS undergraduate students from matriculation through graduation. The BASC supports programs designed to increase persistence and retention among under-represented minority and transfer students. The BASC has primary responsibility for creating strategy and managing implementation of all UG outreach and recruitment activities, as well as student-oriented events. The scope of the BASC is college wide. The college has 5,800 undergraduate majors and offers over 40,000 student credit hours of undergraduate instruction annually.
Job Summary
Under the direction of the Director of the Biology Academic Success Center (BASC), and in collaborative partnership with the other Senior Advisors, provide expert consultation and direction for BASC advisors and peer advisors. Manage activities, supervise a team of advisors and act as the BASC representative with other campus units for campus orientation, mandatory advising, BASC/CBS student petitions, first-year experience events, seminars and advising offered in student housing, front desk advising, and to resolution of undergraduate data issues.
Position Information
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
– Work at desk and computer for several hours at a time. Maneuver/lift student brochures and other materials weighing up to 20 lbs. Hand cart available for use.
– Work occasional flexible schedule including evenings and weekends.
– Work in areas with traffic and noise from surrounding office activities.
– Restricted vacation during peak periods.
– Limited remote work in order to be present as a supervisor and BASC leadership team member.
– Required to work at all College Commencement Ceremonies.
WORK ENVIRONMENT

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Education/Experience:
– Bachelor’s degree in counseling, biology, or related field, or equivalent education and experience in a public university.
– Experience supervising staff or being a project leader of a staff team. Leadership, problem solving, and negotiation skills to motivate a strong interactive team approach among people from diverse backgrounds; to model professional behavior; to resolve problems and conflicts; and to build and retain an effective service-oriented team environment.
– Experience using counseling and guidance techniques to provide comprehensive advising and counseling services, and to provide guidance to students and parents in sensitive and emotional situations.
– Experience with general curricular elements and structures (e.g., courses, units, prerequisites, majors, and minors), assessing college transcripts, and ability to accurately compute or review on-line computations of grade point averages and grade point balances.
– Experience using decision-making and analytical skills to extract from complex situations those elements of greatest relevance, present that information succinctly.
– Experience with computer software for word-processing, spreadsheet, and database applications. Skill to learn to use on-line systems for advising and student records.
Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):
– Interpersonal and communication skills to interact and communicate effectively and professionally with administration, staff, faculty, visitors, and volunteers, using tact, diplomacy, and good judgment during all interactions in the performance of a wide variety of programs and support functions.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Preferred Education/Experience:
– Post-baccalaureate education in counseling, student advising, biology, or related field, or equivalent education and experience in a university setting.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):
– Knowledge to implement principles of performance management and coach staff to enhance their overall contributions to the organization.
– Skill to identify and implement solutions for advising needs to the maximum extent possible within staffing, space and budgetary limitations.
– Organizational and time management skills to meet deadlines and anticipate needs of the center and students.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
This position is a critical position and subject to a background check. Employment is contingent upon successful completion of background investigation including criminal history and identity checks.
