Job Description Summary

Assist CASAS staff as needed.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

1. Help CASAS staff manage the intake of guests in the CASAS lobby. Duties may include but are not limited to:

  • Answering phones
  • Communicating with faculty and staff when their appointments have arrived
  • Scheduling appointments
  • Filling in at front desk for full time staff
  • Answering questions about CASAS and other university services
  • Greeting and directing students and guests

2. Assist with the Summer Orientation Program for Students with ASD and Related Disabilities by providing individualized guidance, support, and assistance to student participants. Duties may include but are not limited to:

  • Serve as a role model and advocate for students.
  • Meet with assigned students on a regular basis to discuss academic and personal goals.
  • Provide support for academic skills, such as time management, organization, and study strategies.
  • Assist students in navigating the college environment, including social activities and events, clubs and organizations, and campus resources.
  • Help students develop social skills and communication strategies, including practicing social interaction and interpreting nonverbal cues.
  • Provide emotional support to students, including listening, validating feelings, and helping students identify coping strategies.
  • Work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and other support services to provide a coordinated approach to student support.
  • Maintain accurate records of meetings and student progress.
  • Attend regular meetings and training sessions with other mentors and program staff.

QUALIFICATIONS AND CREDENTIALS
Minimum Qualifications

  • Able to work 30-40 hours a week (between the hours of 8am-8pm Monday through Sunday)
  • Experience with Microsoft Office and ability to learn other systems and tools
  • Highly motivated, detail-orientated and able to multi-task and function in a fast-paced service environment
  • Able to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to actively listen and provide guidance and feedback in a positive and constructive manner.
  • Knowledge of strategies for supporting individuals with autism in academic and social environments.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise discretion in working with students.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in a related field, such as psychology, education, or counseling.

Experience

  • Experience in an office setting and customer service
  • Experience working with individuals on the autism spectrum, preferably in a college or university setting.

  • Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing to convey clear, well articulated information.
  • Ability to understand, speak, and write English to convey messages and correspond in an articulate and professional manner.
  • Possess public communication skills that allow professional representation of Liberty University to a variety of business and community customers and associates.

  • Excellent computer skills.

  • Intuitively able to reason, analyze information and events, and apply judgment to solve problems of both a routine and complex nature.

Physical and Sensory Abilities

  • Occasionally required to travel to local and campus locations.
  • Regularly required to hear and speak in order to effectively communicate orally.
  • Occasionally required to stand, walk, and climb stairs.
  • Handle materials, reach overhead, kneel or stoop in order to conduct business.
  • Regularly lift 10 or fewer pounds.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Work Environment

The working environment in which one will typically perform the essential functions of this position will vary from a climate-controlled office and/or classroom setting to various locations on- and off-campus.  Offices and classrooms are well lit and the noise level is moderate.
