Position, Department: Tutor, Biology, Science Resource Center, Academic Affairs

Type of Position: Part-time Temporary, Non-Exempt

Work Schedule, Hours per week: varies, 12 hours per week

Pay Range: $16.50-20.63/hour and determined based on relevant years of work experience.

Pay Grade: 51.51

Position Summary: Tutor students in various Biology courses taught at Johnson County Community College. Other responsibilities include referring students to appropriate resources, assist students with computer software necessary for the courses, and other duties as requested by the supervisor

Required Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma with successful completion of one year of undergraduate course work in science and math in addition to specific courses such as General Biology, Cell Biology and Microbiology
  • Must be familiar with laboratory techniques
  • Require good communication skills, including listening with understanding and patience
  • Ability to explain concepts in Biology, both orally and in written form in a one to one or small group setting

    Preferred Qualifications:

  • One year of tutoring experience

    Position Details: Job duties include but are not limited to:

    • TUTOR STUDENTS IN BIOLOGY- Help students understand concepts in biology by relating the course material to what they already know and using real life examples Performance is acceptable when tutor is able to

    a. explain concepts clearly.

    b. help students with models and online software to enhance learning.

    c. help students understand laboratory techniques including the use of Microscope.

    d. Assist with class presentations and embedded support in classes when needed.

    • REFER & AID STUDENTS TO RESOURCES- Provide assistance to look up reliable information online as well as in books for Biology and provide technical assistance Performance is acceptable when tutor is able

    a. direct students to appropriate resources both online and in the center.

    b. explain to students the proper use of resources.

    c. provide help with use of online tools to complete assignments.

    d. help students to interpret information from results obtained using computer software.

    • ASSIST IN DAILY ACTIVITIES OF THE CENTER- Provide assistance in checking out models and books, abide by the policies of the center, respect diversity among students and other tutors. Performance is acceptable when tutor is able to

    a. treat students with respect and exhibit interest in helping them.

    b. step in when need arises to check out models and books.

    c. make sure that students follow the policies of the center.

    d. keep the center clean and organized.

    • FOLLOW GOOD WORK ETHICS- Exhibit good work ethics by being reliable and dedicated. Performance is acceptable when tutor is able to

    a. report on time at the center and stays the whole time according to the schedule. b. report absence in advance if possible; if not, in a timely manner so that alternate arrangements can be made.
