Position Summary:

The HASS (Humanities and Social Sciences) Tutor provides tutorial instruction for students in qualified subjects, enhancing student understanding of assignments and assisting with general study skills and strategies. Tutors have opportunities for growth, including training, certifications, increased wages, and leadership roles.

This position also provides general customer service at the Tutoring front desk and basic tutoring support. The HASS Tutor performs a variety of routine clerical duties, responds to and resolves common inquiries and problems, and completes special projects.

Tutors within the HASS Team may also pursue a specialization in Mentor Tutoring. The Mentor Tutor provides tutorial instruction for students in qualified subjects, enhancing student understanding of assignments and assisting with general study skills and strategies. Mentor Tutors have a critical impact on students during their first semester by helping students adjust to college-level academia and assisting them with CWI 101 content.

Essential Functions:

  • Provide academic assistance to students in qualified subjects and participate in data gathering related to tutoring activities. Humanities and Social Sciences tutors assist students in mastering the methods of research and improving their understanding and comprehension of subject matter content.
  • Meet and communicate with students and colleagues in person and via Upswing, Slack, email, Blackboard, and related platforms.
  • May collaborate with faculty to provide customized tutoring support in specific, designated courses.
  • May contribute to the preparation of workshops and materials that will enhance student understanding of coursework.
  • May engage in more intensive tasks within Tutoring Services, including various leadership roles.
  • Provide customer service, directional assistance, and general office management in Tutoring Centers by phone, email, or in person.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • The Mentor Tutor:

o Provides academic assistance to students in CWI 101. Uses principles of peer mentoring to assist students in various aspects of the college experience, including study skills, assisting with technology, referring students to campus-wide resources, and more.
o May collaborate with CWI 101 faculty to provide embedded mentor tutoring support in specific, designated courses. Minimum Qualifications:

  • Completion of coursework in subjects to be tutored with at least a “B” or equivalent. 

o Mentor Tutors must have passed a first-year experience course with at least a “B” or equivalent professional experience.

  • Has completed a fundamental tutoring course or will complete one within one semester of hire.
  • Good communication and customer service skills in a diverse, multicultural environment.
  • Proficient in computer usage and word processing, database, and spreadsheet programs.
