Position Title: TRiO Upward Bound Math & Science- Tutor, Multiple Subjects 2023-2024 (Temporary, Part-Time, up to 19.5 hours per week)

Department: Desert Vista Campus, TRiO Upward Bound Math & Science (UBMS) Location: Multiple Locations (Alta Vista, Desert View, Sunnyside high schools)

Rate of Pay: $13.85 – $15.35/ hour [Rate change to $13.85-$18.35 on Jul 1, 2023]

Position Summary,

The successful candidate for this part-time position will assist TRiO UBMS’s high school students at AVHS, DVHS, and/or SSHS to develop comprehension in the subject coursework. The successful candidate will effectively communicate and help improve participants’ study skills and habits. Tutors will also assist the Program Coordinator in virtual or in-person workshops, events, meetings, and engage students in a collaborative learning environment. The tutor would be assigned to one of the service high schools but may visit the other high schools and/or PCC’s Desert Vista Campus, when necessary. The high schools that TRiO UBMS provides services to are Alta Vista High School (AVHS), Desert View High School (DVHS), and Sunnyside High School (SHS).

Subjects include: Math, Science, Writing/Language Arts. (Multiple subjects preferred)

The work schedule for this position may include working evenings and weekends. The hourly rate is based on certification level. Most of the working hours will be in-person at the high schools with a few online (if approved by the Program Manager).

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Assist students by providing instructional tutoring and assistance with basic concepts, specific problems, homework, test preparation, and the most effective use of online resources, textbooks, and instructional materials
• Provide students with appropriate and effective study skills to increase their academic success and independence
• Provide students encouragement and support in the areas of self-confidence, study habits, and time management.
• Engage students and assist teachers and program coordinators in a virtual/in-person classroom environment
• Establish effective and cooperative relationships with diverse student and employee populations

Job Requirements:

• High School Diploma or GED
• Proven classroom excellence (grade A or B) in the subject(s) to be tutored
• Excellent communication skills (both virtual and in-person)
• Tutors must complete CRLA level 1 certification within one year of employment

Additional Job Requirements:

• Reliable transportation to and from multiple locations: (Pima Community College – Desert Vista Campus (PCC-DV), AVHS, DVHS, and SHS)
• Access to the following technology is necessary if tutoring virtually:
• Reliable and stable internet connection
• Computer with webcam and microphone
• Tutors must complete CRLA level 1 certification within one year of employment

Preferred:

• Tutoring experience with minors in high school
• Experience in tutoring multiple subjects
• Bilingual in Spanish and English
