Example of Duties: POSITION TYPE/EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK:
This is a part-time, professional position, and hours of work and days are determined by the supervisor to meet student needs. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand.
Pay rate – $40/hr.
JOB SUMMARY:
Reporting to the Director of Upward Bound Math Science (UBMS) and the Center for STEM Excellence, the Coordinator facilitates the Center for STEM Excellence activities and coordinates the peer and professional tutoring and support services in designated subjects.
DUTIES:
- Organize and coordinate Center for STEM Excellence programming including, but not limited to instructional support, student activities, tutoring, academic workshops, and leadership/mentorship opportunities, with staff and in collaboration with other College units as appropriate.
- Facilitate positive relationships with target academic programs and other units on campus.
- Responsible for hiring Center for STEM Excellence staff, including peer and professional tutors, as needed in accord with Federal, State, and College regulations.
- Assess academic support efforts to improve students’ academic performance and delivery of services.
- Support and implement the use of technology to enhance tutoring.
- Monitor, in collaboration with staff, the recruitment, training, retention, supervision, and scheduling of professional and peer advisors and tutors.
- Selects peer tutors to assist students taking courses in mathematics and science. Develop and administer the entrance test for potential peer tutors. Offers training and enrichment to peer tutors, if necessary. Schedules all peer tutorial sessions and keeps records of all such tutoring activities. Monitors and supervises peer tutors to assure that appropriate and effective tutoring is available. Develops, administers and monitors a budget for the services. Manages, authorizes and certifies the timesheets of all peer tutors for payment processing.
- Serve on appropriate College committees and participate in relevant College initiatives.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications: REQUIREMENTS:
Education
Master’s degree from an accredited institution in a field related to math, science, or other as appropriate.
Experience
- Two years professional experience in an institution of higher education or in education, higher education or other field that is directly related to the functions of the position to be filled or equivalency as determined by the appointing authority.
- Applicants who do not possess the required education may substitute required experience on a year-for-year basis (30 credit hours is considered one year of college.)
- A Ph.D. or an Ed.D. degree may be substituted for two years of the required experience.
ADDITIONAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Wide knowledge of the principles and techniques essential to performance of the specific responsibilities assigned.
- Ability to acquire knowledge of college policies and procedures.
- Ability to acquire knowledge of basic budget principles and techniques.
- Ability to understand, analyze, interpret and apply established law, regulations, procedures, precedents and guidelines.
- Ability to organize assigned work, analyze problems and develop appropriate work methods.
- Ability to advise and counsel students and others concerning college programs, activities and services.
