Job Description
Position Summary:
The Wardrobe/Costume Shop Supervisor is responsible for managing all aspects of the School’s
costume shops, inventory, and rentals, including wardrobe fittings and costume maintenance. This position supervises MSM’s wardrobe
staff and works in collaboration with guest designers, creative teams, and production crew. The Wardrobe Supervisor operates in both the
Opera Theatre and Musical Theatre productions, and supports the wardrobe portion of the Musical Theatre tech and design courses. The
Wardrobe Supervisor also manages Joan’s Closet, a collection of formal and semi-formal attire established by former MSM Board of
Trustees member Joan Taub Ades, who donated dozens of gowns to provide opera students access to garments for recitals and
auditions.
Domains:
Opera Theatre and Musical Theatre Productions
- Assume the role of Wardrobe Supervisor, as assigned by the Managing Director, for Opera and Musical Theatre (OMT) productions.
- Supervise and delegate responsibilities to all wardrobe staff, including overhire wardrobe supervisors, dressers, and student
dressers. - Work in collaboration with guest designers, creative teams, and production crew.
- Adhere to production
budgets. - Manage MSM’s costume shops, costume stock, and related spaces.
- Update costume inventory: rentals, stock
items, materials, supplies, and equipment. - Purchase costume shop materials.
- Serve as staff liaison for OMT costume
designers. - Track daily rehearsal reports, and deliver costume-related elements to rehearsal rooms.
- Schedule and
attend costume fittings, and record fitting/alteration notes. - Manage load-in and load out of all productions.
- Photograph, inventory, restore, and ship all rental garments.
- Launder rehearsal and production garments, and manage dry
cleaning. - Establish and maintain relationships with vendors.
- Create staff schedule in coordination with OMT Production
Managers. - Act as Costume Coordinator for MSM Summer.
- Plan and lead maintenance projects.
Musical
Theatre Program Design/Tech Classes
- Support wardrobe portion of Musical Theatre freshman theater tech and
Introduction to Theatrical Design courses. - Spend approximately 4-6 hours supporting the fall tech class, and 8-12 hours supporting
the spring design class.
Joan’s Closet Administration
- Oversee the management
of Joan’s Closet, a collection of formal and semi-formal attire providing opera students with garments for recitals and
auditions. - Manage inventory of donations to Joan’s Closet.
- Shop for additional items when necessary to fill
gaps in sizes. - Inform Office of Advancement of new donations for donor acknowledgment.
Job
Requirements:
- 3+ years wardrobe experience in a theatrical setting.
- Possess exceptional verbal and written
communication skills appropriate for a professional, educational environment. - Maintain professional demeanor in challenging
situations, especially where students are present. - Cultivate safety and comfort in dressing rooms, quick-change areas, and fitting
rooms. - Ability to delegate.
- Interest in participating in strategic planning for future performance season and
department structure. - Basic budget and accounting skills and the ability to project costs.
- Team-oriented approach to
problem solving and strong collaborative skills. - Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite. Experience with database
software is highly desirable.
