Job Summary
The Department of English in the College of Arts and Sciences at Clayton State University seeks applicants for a 12-month, academic services professional position to serve as manager of Writers’ Studio and teach up to one course per semester as needed. The position is a 12-month position that reports to the Chair of the Department of English and will begin on July 1, 2023. Salary will be commensurate with experience and competitive with comparable programs.
The Department of English offers undergraduate degrees and minors in English, with concentrations in writing (creative and professional), literature, and secondary education. The department also teaches first-year writing and literature survey courses in the general education curriculum. It offers English courses in two graduate degree programs: the multidisciplinary Master of Arts in Liberal Studies and the Master of Arts in Teaching in English. Responsibilities
- Manage the daily operations of the Writers’ Studio under the direction of the faculty advisor
- Handle personnel paperwork for hiring and terminating tutors
- Create the tutoring schedule
- Supervise the tutors, maintain work schedules, and approve timecards for tutors
- Assist the faculty advisor in training the tutors
- Evaluate data and provide reports on the academic impact of the Writers’ Studio
- Provide reports on the Studio as requested by the chair
- Create and schedule writing workshops for students
- Publicize the Writers’ Studio, its writing workshops, and events
- Collaborate with other units and programs across campus to offer writing tutoring
- Engage in professional development related to the position
- Teach up to 1 English course per semester as needed
- Work in the Writers’ Studio in-person M-F, 8:30-5 when the Studio is open
- Ensure the Writers’ Studio facilities are clean and safe; facilitate repairs when needed; recommend upgrades when needed
- Support the mission of the Department of English as needed.
Required Qualifications
- An earned M.A. in English, English Education, or M.A. in Liberal Studies, with experience and/or coursework in Composition Pedagogy, Writing Program Administration, and/or Writing Center Administration
- Master’s degree with at least 18 hours of graduate coursework in English
- A record of successful college-level teaching and/or composition pedagogy coursework at the undergraduate level
- Professional development, education, scholarship, and/or experience in tutoring
- Knowledge of the application of technology to enhance teaching and learning
- Commitment to teaching first-generation students and fostering a diverse and inclusive academic community
- As evidenced by background and experience, demonstrated intercultural competence with diverse populations in teaching and as well as the ability to work collaboratively within a diverse department and university
- Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills
- Evidence of willingness to participate in professional development in field
- Knowledge of the application of technology to enhance teaching and learning.
Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge of scheduling software and instructional design software
- Experience working in a Writers’ Studio, Writing Center, and/or tutoring writing
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Applications.
